About the Artist
There are unique aspects in Bogdan B?canu?s playing that set him apart from the rest: he is intense, spiritual, strong, at times even aggressive, and yet incredibly romantic, sensitive, sensual ... His approach to music comes from within: music is his essence, his very reason for living. Hearing his music is a wonderful experience that remains forever in one?s heart. Listening to the wide range of sound colours and nuances coming out of his instrument is like reading into his soul. His first engagement as percussionist for the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra George Enescu came in 1988, aged 13. He began touring with them immediately in Romania, Austria, Switzerland and Turkey. At the same time he performed solo recitals on both percussion and piano as well as concerts with various other orchestras. He received lessons from renowned teachers like Keiko Abe (Japan) and Siegfried Fink (Germany), until he commenced study with Peter Sadlo at the University Mozarteum Salzburg (Austria). In 1996 Bogdan B?canu obtained the Keiko Abe Prize at the World Marimba Competition in Stuttgart (Germany). In the same year he founded his ensemble PRISMA Percussion with a formidable and innovative repertoire. The ensemble had immediate success and is in the meantime touring world-wide. Between 1997 and 2004 Bogdan B?canu taught masterclasses, gave recitals and concerts with orchestra or ensemble in Norway, Denmark, Holland, England, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Romania, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Japan, Korea, Australia, Canada and the USA. He has participated in important music festivals such as The Biennial in Brisbane (Australia), the Princeton Marimba Festival, the Percussion Festival of Thessaloniki and the Lockenhaus Music Festival. He has performed in concert with Keiko Abe, Gidon Kremer and Peter Sadlo amongst others. In August 1998 Keiko Abe invited B?canu to the World Marimba Festival in Osaka where he performed with her and other famous marimbists such as Nancy Zeltsman, Katarzyna Mycka, Lee Howard Stevens, Robert van Sice, Gordon Stout and William Moersch. Since the age of 23 he has been Professor for Marimba at the famous Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz (Austria). B?canu is Professor for the Katarzyna Mycka Marimba Academy in Poland and has appeared twice as a guest lecturer at the Zeltsman Marimba Festival in the USA. His membership in the Jury for the 2nd International Marimba Competition in Belgium 2004 and at the Duo Competition in Brno (Czech Republic), not to mention the inaugural International Marimba Festival Linz of which he is the Artistic Director, are further indications of B?canu?s ongoing contributions to the music world. Bogdan B?canu plays exclusively on ADAMS Artist Classic marimba.
